Business Brief -- BioChem Pharma Inc.: Trials Scheduled for 3TC, To Test AIDS-Virus Effect BioChem Pharma Inc. said clinical trials will begin next month in the U. S. and seven other countries to test the efficacy of 3TC in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus, or HIV. Like other anti-HIV drugs, 3TC is a nucleoside analogue, which interferes with the replication of the virus that causes AIDS. A spokeswoman for the Canadian unit of Britain's Glaxo Holdings PLC, which is developing the drug under an agreement with BioChem, described the tests as "early Phase Two-Three" trials. She said Glaxo hopes to complete the tests by the end of this year and then broaden the trials. BioChem, a Montreal-based biotechnology company, discovered 3TC and signed an agreement with Glaxo covering commercialization of the drug.
