    U. S. Surgeon General Novello released an AIDS report that
 includes explicit instructions on using condoms and a new focus on
 the dangers posed for women.  The report, issued at an AIDS
 conference in Berlin, counsels against intravenous drug use but
 describes how to clean needles to reduce the risk of AIDS.

    Former Sen. Goldwater declared that the U. S. military should
 abolish its prohibition on homosexuals.  The 84-year-old conservative
 Republican from Arizona said in an opinion article published in the
 Washington Post that "you don't need to be `straight' to fight and
 die for your country.  You just need to shoot straight."
