Technology Brief -- Chiron Corp.: Vaccine Prototype Blocks Hepatitis in Some Chimps Chiron Corp., Emeryville, Calif., said a prototype of a vaccine developed in a joint venture with Ciba-Geigy Ltd. prevented hepatitis infection in a group of chimpanzees. Five of seven chimpanzees tested didn't contract the hepatitis C virus after being given a vaccine developed by Biocine Co., the joint venture formed with Switzerland's Ciba-Geigy, Chiron said. "This study provides data that may allow Biocine to initiate human trials in 1994," Dino Dina, Biocine president, said. Biocine is developing vaccines for preventive or therapeutic use against herpes, AIDS and other infectious diseases.
