    U. S. AIDS cases increased at a higher-than-expected rate in the
 first three months of 1993, when over 35,000 new cases were
 reported, health officials said.  Most of the new cases stemmed from
 a new definition of the disease, but even cases not attributed to
 the broader definition rose by 21%, double the rate for the period
 last year.
