Technology: Immune Response Stock Jumps as Study Of Vaccine Evaluated SAN DIEGO -- Immune Response Corp. said clinical trial results of its vaccine against human immunodeficiency virus infection are being evaluated by the company and its partner, but wouldn't indicate the results. In national over-the-counter trading Monday, Immune Response shares rose 23%, or $2.50, to $13.25, on 2.3 million shares. Jim Glavin, president and chief executive, said he tried to discourage assumptions on Wall Street that no news is good news. The clinical trials were completed in September. "I think there was some speculation that if we had any opportunity to analyze data at all and it was negative, that something would be out by now," he said. "I tried to dispel that." The company and its partner, Rhone-Poulenc Rorer Inc., recently "unblinded" the clinical trial results, allowing researchers to compare treated control groups. But Immune Response said it wouldn't publicly discuss the results of its AIDS-virus vaccine until analysis is complete. Immune Response will present data at an AIDS conference in Berlin in June. Immune Response and Rhone-Poulenc Rorer, a unit of the French pharmaceutical company Rhone-Poulenc SA, also said their joint venture acquired additional rights to the vaccine in Europe, Africa, and Central and South America. The joint venture already has U. S. rights to the product. Mr. Glavin said "no funds changed hands" for the additional rights from Pasteur Merieux Connaught Group, a unit of Institut Merieux, which retains distribution rights for the vaccine in Canada and France.
