Technology Brief -- Enzo Biochem Inc.: Three Key Patents Granted To Aid Genetic Research Enzo Biochem Inc. said the U. S. patent office granted the New York company three key patents that will enable it to broaden its work in the new genetic antisense field. Enzo was notified about the first patent in August 1992. Two subsequent patents, to be issued soon, will give Enzo exclusive rights to specific procedures and products involved in genetic antisense research. Antisense technology permits scientists to attach a gene to a cell that would regulate the function of another gene in the same cell. Antisense genes have the potential of blocking progress of defective genes. Researchers believe the technology could eventually be used to treat various types of cancer, AIDS and other diseases. Dr. Elazar Rabbani, Enzo president, told shareholders that preliminary discussions have already begun with companies interested in licensing the technology for therapeutic and agricultural purposes. Enzo licenses genetic antisense technology from the Research Foundation of the State University of New York.
