Letters to the Editor: ACT UP Isn't `Gay' In his Feb. 12 editorial-page story, "The Unlikeliest Democrat," about presidential candidate Paul Tsongas, Paul A. Gigot mischaracterizes our organization, ACT UP, as a "gay extremist" group. ACT UP is an acronym for AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power. The word gay doesn't appear. Though many ACT UP members are gay men, we also include lesbians, people of color, heterosexuals and anyone interested in ending the AIDS plague in our ranks.
