Business Brief -- Epitope Inc.: Biotechnology Concern Posts Loss for Quarter and Year Citing higher research and development costs, Epitope Inc. reported a wider loss for the fiscal fourth quarter and the year. For the quarter ended Sept. 30, the biotechnology concern posted a net loss of $2.3 million, or 27 cents a share, on revenue of $784,000, compared with a year-earlier loss of $1.8 million, or 23 cents a share, on revenue of $650,000. Epitope has only one product now on the market, a confirmatory AIDS test called EPIblot. The company's agricultural unit, Agritope, recently conducted field trials of genetically engineered tomatoes, intended to have longer shelf life. For the year, the Beaverton, Ore., company posted a net loss of $7.2 million, or 83 cents a share, on revenue of $3 million, vs. a net loss of $4.9 million, or 64 cents a share, on revenue of $3.8 million a year earlier. Epitope said full-year revenue was down because of lower sales of its AIDS test in the first six months. Research and development costs for the year were $4.4 million, up 22% from the prior year.
