    Earvin "Magic" Johnson announced that he is retiring from the Los
 Angeles Lakers for good because of controversies surrounding his
 planned comeback.  The 33-year-old basketball star, who has the AIDS
 virus, had said in September that he would return to professional
 basketball.  A few players voiced concern that he might infect
 others.
