Technology Brief -- Liposome Technology Inc.: Studies Show Effectiveness Of Drug Delivery System Liposome Technology Inc., Menlo Park, Calif., said animal studies showed its long-term liposome-based delivery system for anti-cancer drugs was more effective than either conventional liposome delivery systems or injection of the drugs. The company's animal studies of its so-called Stealth long-term liposome delivery system were conducted with university researchers in New York, California and Edmonton, Alberta. The long-term system increased effectiveness of delivery of four agents used to treat leukemias, lymphomas, and colon and mammary cancers in test animals, said Frank Martin, the company's vice president, research. The system uses slow-release fatty capsule to deliver drugs. Both conventional liposome capsules and injections release drugs more rapidly. Liposome Technology is also conducting first-stage tests of the capsules for the Food and Drug Administration to deliver the drug Doxil to AIDS patients with Kaposi's sarcoma.
