    BABES UP IN ARMS is the cry:  Daycare forces mobilize for
 deductions.

    BALANCING CHECK-OFFS was tricky, as state returns piled on
 pleas for gifts.
    Alabama's and California's 1990 returns each listed eight
 causes seeking aid, mostly out of refunds, the Federation of
 Tax Administrators says; Idaho and Rhode Island had six.  All
 40 states with broad personal income taxes had at least one
 check-off, if only to send $1 of tax to a political-campaign
 fund.  Wildlife benefited in 37 states, abused children in 16,
 the Olympics in eight, AIDS patients in Massachusetts, and 25
 other causes here and there.
