    MOSCOW -- It should have been Russian republic leader
 Boris Yeltsin's big day, but Soviet President Mikhail
 Gorbachev quietly stole the show.

    Indeed, Mr. Gorbachev was so relaxed that during a break
 he recited with a grin what he called his favorite
 anti-Gorbachev joke to a small group of reporters and Russian
 legislators gathered around him.  The joke went:
    It is said that French President Francois Mitterrand has
 100 lovers and one of them has AIDS, but he doesn't know
 which one.  U. S. President Bush has 100 bodyguards and one of
 them is a terrorist, but he doesn't know which one.
 Meanwhile, Mr. Gorbachev has 100 economic advisers and only
 one of them is smart, but he also doesn't know which one.
