The new cases bring the global total of reported people with AIDS to 288,337 in 157 countries, but WHO estimates the true total to be close to 700,000, with a further eight million to 10 million people believed infected by the HIV virus that causes the disease. WHO said the U. S. had recorded 3,339 new cases, raising its overall tally to 144,221.
