    A federal health official warned that some Latin American
 and Caribbean countries may be heading toward an epidemic of
 AIDS similar to a wave of the disease in parts of Africa.  The
 official said AIDS in some countries was spreading quickly
 from homosexuals to heterosexuals, with a relatively high
 proportion of women affected.
