 for white Americans, benefiting from declines) in heart
 disease and strokes, rose to 75.4 years in 1986 from 75.3
 years in 1970.  But the life expectancy for black Americans,
 increasingly the victims of homicide and AIDS, declined to
 69.4 years from 69.5 years in the same period.
