Technology: MicroGeneSys AIDS Vaccine WEST HAVEN, Conn. -- MicroGeneSys Inc., which is testing an experimental vaccine against acquired immune deficiency syndrome, said it is launching a second test of the vaccine to see if it can prevent the onset of AIDS in healthy carriers of the virus. This approach, called immunotherapy, already is being tested by several groups including that of polio vaccine pioneer Jonas Salk in La Jolla, Calif. MicroGeneSys said it plans to test its VaxSyn vaccine preparation in 30 virus-positive volunteers who may be male or female but must be judged free of AIDS symptoms. The test will involve a series of injections over 12 months. The risk of the vaccine to volunteers is unknown, MicroGeneSys said. But prior tests in healthy uninfected volunteers haven't resulted in any serious adverse reactions, the company said.
