    In the past, companies went global when they grew up.  Now
 some are taking the big step from the start.

    British Biotechnology, which is working on a
 cholesterol-lowering drug, an AIDS vaccine and other
 products, plans to market the drugs in Europe itself.  But in
 the U. S. and Japan, partners will sell its products.  "You
 have to address international markets if you expect to get an
 adequate return from your investment in pharmaceuticals,"
 says Mr. McCullagh.
