Salk Institute's President, F. de Hoffmann, Resigns LA JOLLA, Calif. -- Frederic de Hoffmann resigned as president of the Salk Institute, after being diagnosed as having acquired immune deficiency syndrome. A spokeswoman for the biological research institue said Dr. de Hoffmann, 64 years old, was diagnosed several weeks ago. She said the doctor contracted the virus as a result of a blood transfusion he had during coronary bypass surgery in March 1984, before testing of the blood supply for the AIDS virus was widespread. "He ... is currently at home feeling very well," the spokeswoman said. Nobel Laureate Dr. Renato Dulbecco, a Distinguished Research Professor at the institute, was appointed acting president until the board of trustees elects a successor. Dr. de Hoffmann will assist in the transition as president emeritus, and will remain a trustee. Dr. de Hoffmann, a former senior vice president of General Dynamics Corp., joined Salk in 1970. Dr. Jonas Salk, the polio vaccine pioneer who founded the institute, heads a San Diego research concern that is developing potential vaccines to combat AIDS.
