    AIDS claimed about 13,000 lives in the U. S. last year,
 which would make it the 15th leading cause of death among
 Americans, the National Center for Health Statistics
 reported.  The survey, the first that included AIDS in the
 agency's annual summary of disease, indicated that AIDS
 claimed more lives than did birth defects last year.
