Total AIDS Cases Reported To Agency Reaches 96,433 GENEVA (AP) -- The number of AIDS cases reported to the World Health Organization stood at 96,433 last Tuesday, including 7,387 new cases registered in 75 countries since the beginning of the year. Updated reports from the U. S., France, Italy, Canada and Haiti accounted for 78% of the recorded increase through May, according to figures released last week. The U. S. total of acquired immune deficiency syndrome cases reported stood at 61,580, including 4,348 new victims from January through April. France trailed the U. S. as the country with the second-highest number of cases, 3,628, including 555 new cases during the 1988 first quarter. Brazil had the third-highest overall total, with 2,956 cases. It reported 206 new cases from January through April. In all of 1987, the country had 1,361 new cases. Other countries that showed disproportionately high increases included Haiti, with 231 new cases through April. In all of last year, Haiti reported just 331 cases. Italy recorded 387 new cases, and Canada had 232. The U. S. had the highest case rate among all industrialized countries, with 8.5 AIDS victims per 100,000 people. France had a rate of 3.3, Australia 2.1, and Canada 1.9.
