Letters to the Editor: Masters & Johnson Affirm AIDs Reports In your March 14 news article ("Masters Developing AIDS Product for Problem He Warns Of in Book"), you suggest that our publication of a book warning of the reality of infection with the AIDS virus among heterosexuals was improper because Dr. Masters was simultaneously seeking to raise funds for research on a possible means of preventing heterosexual transmission of the virus. Certain facts that the article did not note might be of interest to your readers. First, Dr. Masters presented his research ideas at two scientific meetings, one held in December at the Kinsey Institute, and the other at a conference at the National Institutes of Health in January. Certainly if Dr. Masters had been motivated by any thought of personal financial gain, he would not have outlined his proposal in this manner and invited any interested scientists to pursue his plan on their own. Second, even if funding is obtained to conduct this research and it eventually leads to a commercial product, any royalties would go to the Masters & Johnson Institute, which is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt public foundation.
