    TEXACO AND PENNZOIL executives expressed hope last night
 that they can reach a settlement today in their $10.3 billion
 legal battle.  A major unresolved issue in a proposed $3
 billion accord is whether Texaco will pay interest going back
 to April 12, when Texaco filed for bankruptcy-law protection.
 The two companies are about $500 million apart, according to
 Texaco advisers.

    Genentech scientists said they cloned a natural protein
 that appears to block infection by the AIDS virus.  But the
 substance still faces months to years of testing before any
 potential benefits can be determined.
