Carrington Studying A New AIDS Drug During 6-Month Trial DALLAS -- Carrington Laboratories Inc. said it and Innogenetics N. V. of Gent, Belgium, have begun a six-month clinical trial to evaluate the effectiveness of a new drug against acquired immune deficiency syndrome. The controlled study -- conducted on 48 patients with AIDS-related complex -- also will determine whether Carrington's Carrisyn drug and AZT, an antiviral drug approved for the treatment of AIDS, act synergistically when used together. Carrington said the trial will include a research program at Innogenetics, a biotechnology concern, to examine Carrisyn's immune stimulation. The drug has been shown to stimulate the cells that regulate the body's immune system, Carrington said. Innogenetics's affiliate, Barc N. V., will monitor the trial in cooperation with clinicians and researchers in six university hospitals in Europe, Carrington said. Carrington said the studies are intended to produce data to support an application to market Carrisyn in some European and African countries. Carrington manufactures and markets wound-healing, skin-care and other products, and conducts research to develop new pharmaceuticals.
