   DALLAS -- Carrington Laboratories Inc. said the Securities
and Exchange Commission made an informal request for
information about recent trading in Carrington shares and the
testing of a product.
   The pharmaceutical research concern said it is cooperating
with the SEC.  "We aren't at all concerned about the
questions," Clinton Howard, Carrington's president, said.  He
said the company believes that the commission will confirm
the adequacy of the company's disclosures.
   Mr. Howard said he doesn't know what prompted the SEC
inquiry.  But he said there have been heavy sell-offs of the
company's shares in advance of certain news reports on the
company, including four articles this year in Barron's.
   Also, he said the SEC is interested in information about
the testing of a compound, known as Carrisyn, which the
company views as a possible treatment for acquired immune
deficiency syndrome, pressure sores and inflammatory bowel
disease.  He said the SEC wanted to know how extensive the
testing has been.
   Last month, the Food and Drug Administration ordered a
private physician to stop his independent testing of the drug
as a treatment for AIDS. However, the company said it plans
to sponsor a formal study of its own.  The company said the
FDA "raised certain questions concerning the study,"
including the chemistry and pharmacology of Carrisyn.
   Carrington also said it plans a separate study of the drug
as a treatment for the bowel ailment.  Its previously
announced study of the drug as a treatment of pressure sores
was delayed until the gel base is reformulated.  The study
will be resumed this month, the company added.
   Carrington shares closed yesterday at $19, down $4.25, in
national over-the-counter trading.
