Cetus Receives 2 Patents For Diagnostic Testing EMERYVILLE, Calif. -- Cetus Corp. said the U. S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued two patents for its work in diagnostic testing using synthetic DNA. The biotechnology concern has been experimenting with DNA "probes," which attach themselves to certain genes and enable scientists to detect such diverse targets as sickle-cell anemia and AIDS, or acquired immune deficiency syndrome. Cetus said one of the new patents covers the colored "labeling" system used to identify the probes after they combine with their targets. It said the other patent covers methods for HLA typing, which is used for determining paternity, tissue typing for organ transplants, and determining disease susceptibility.
