Travenol-Genentech Diagnostics' test was the fifth to receive Food and Drug Administration approval. The other tests for detecting the virus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome are marketed by Abbott Laboratories Inc., ElectroNucleonics Inc., Litton Industries Inc. and Biotech Research Laboratories Inc. and Du Pont Co. Baxter Travenol makes a wide range of medical care products. Genentech, based in South San Francisco, Calif., develops and sells pharmaceuticals produced by recombinant DNA technology.
