Cellular Products Is Cleared to Evaluate Test for Blood Donors BUFFALO, N. Y. -- Cellular Products Inc. said it received approval from the Food and Drug Administration to begin clinical evaluation of the company's blood test for previous exposure to a virus suspected in acquired immune deficiency syndrome. The company said the test allows blood-collection facilities to check donors for prior exposure to HTLV-III, a suspected cause of AIDS. The company said it will run the study in four centers around the country. It will include results of about 7,000 blood specimens. Cellular Products, which develops, markets and produces protein substances for the biomedical industry, said it is working on second-generation and third-generation HTLV-III tests that would detect not only prior exposure to, but active infectious virus.
